Yes, I Do Artist Talks and other Trivial Stuff

Okay so this isn’t something that I push very hard but it HAS come up quite a few times recently–yes, I do artist talks. I know, ack. But in fact I have done a quite a few speaking engagements in the past, sometimes to pretty amazing audiences. Once I addressed the entire company of Blackbaud with their CEO, Mike Gianoni. Me and Morning Joe, who dropped by to look at some of my photos in the Blackbaud HQ!

Then later I spoke at their BBCon convention as well as gave a keynote to BBCon Pacific, which was awesome.  Here is a little teaser of part of what I covered in that show:

Sometimes people get excited about the talks and do stories. I blanch at publicity or exposure, even if it’s small potatoes.

But what I DON’T shy away from is telling the story of what I have witnessed around the world in my photojournalism and filmmaking career. In light of current geopolitical events, it’s probably more important than ever to tell the stories of justice and human resilience. Keep the faith!

Grace

A few weeks ago I went on an assignment with International Justice Mission to do two stories in Uganda on illegal property seizure and one in Kenya on police brutality. They were fascinating. I just finished the story of Grace, an IJM client who was forced from her land.

IJM intervened, and after a great deal of effort succeeded in restoring Grace and her family to her land. The land itself was unbelievably gorgeous. Simple and remote, but the kind of place that screams “Africa” and affords her and her children a safe place to live and a decent shot at a future full of promise. This woman has a great story. She is tough. She is full of courage. And yes, she is full of grace. What a great name for her, and what an inspiration to me. Thanks IJM, and thanks Grace, for letting me step on that land and become a part of this story…

15 Years of Justice

Recently, I had the privilege of doing the film for International Justice Mission’s 15 Year Anniversary celebration. Watch it on YouTube. My team worked hard to showcase the best of IJM’s work fighting injustice…what a remarkable organization. Thanks to Sara Groves for the music!

Home for Home

The one for one model made famous by Tom’s is spreading. A few months back a group in Denver called Second Story Homes asked me to put together a quick slideshow for a model they are employing using homes, not shoes. I did all the photography in this piece except for the Samaritan’s Purse photos in the middle section–those were donated and used by permission from S.P. Now go get your dream home!

Hillary and Logan

This past October I had the pleasure of filming Hillary and Logan’s destination wedding at the Elmore’s Eight Torches Ranch in Edwards, Colorado. It was a wonderful time…the fall aspens were in full color in the Vail Valley, making it the ideal time for a wedding. The bride and groom were awesome, as were the families and friends of these two. The ceremony was fantastic, as was the ranch. It was also a pleasure to work alongside James Christianson, a real pro and fellow Nikon shooter and watch the incomparable Carolyn Moorman in action. And I LOVED that line dancing! Hillary and Logan looked like movie stars. What a great time. Here is the movie (watch it in HD)!
