Made With His Own Bare Hands

Geoffrey Keating - September 16, 2014

This is not the Keating from the Keating Five scandal in the 1980s. No, this is Geoffrey Keating, fifth-generation furniture maker whose grandfathers built churches and monasteries throughout the southwestern United States. All of Geoffrey’s pieces are hand-wrought original designs using salvaged or sustainably harvested North American hardwoods. He and I are neighbors, and I’ve gotten to know him and his work over the last few months. Let me just say that it’s awesome. Take a look for yourself:

Dodging Ebola

Medical Teams International Ebola Response - Monrovia, Liberia 2014

Recently I spent a few weeks in Liberia shooting various NGO (photos here are from Medical Teams International) work responding to the Ebola virus. The first few days there were pretty intense, but soon I was used to the pervasive hand washing, temperature checks and social “distancing” practiced everywhere in an attempt to stop the spread of the deadly disease. While I was there Time Magazine announced that its 2014 Person of the Year was the Ebola Fighters…and since I was there fighting Ebola, I felt proud to be in good company and recognized as part of it. My hat is off to all the Ebola fighters who are still there and in West Africa helping save and improve lives.

Wired

A few weeks back a friend asked me to go shoot the wire factory she works at before it closes operations at the end of the year. I thought it sounded cool and said sure, why not? I like poking around in weird places like old factories. Well, it was pretty awesome. This place has some serious history behind it, and walking through there was like walking back in time: the lighting, the sounds, the smells–they all spoke to a trade done the old school way in an industry that is moving toward new school efficiencies. It will be a shame when the place closes…here are a few of the several hundred shots I took that day to capture a lost art before it’s gone forever.

Coming to America

One of the coolest on-going assignments I have is working with World Relief shooting refugees who have just come from their own countries to now live in ours. There is a lot happening in this whole process…from airport pickups to moving into and furnishing new apartments, to learning English and how things work in America. It’s all fascinating. Here is a look into a recent shoot in Nashville.
